Dear Friend and Supporter,

We at The Simpson-Baber Foundation For The Autistic, Inc. thank you for expressing an interest in learning more about Autism, this Foundation, and its mission.

To understand our mission, one must first understand what Autism is. The term "Autism" covers a spectrum of disorders that affects 1 in every 110 children - 1 in 94 in the state of New Jersey.  This means virtually every neighborhood school or other relatively small collection of children includes one or more children with Autism. Autism is a serious developmental disability that manifests itself in severe communication and social developmental delays. It exhibits itself in inappropriate play, extreme social withdrawal, intense discomfort with new situations, people or surroundings, lack of facial affect, pre-occupation and fixation, and behavioral problems. Early intervention is critical as the window for successful treatment of Autism closes very quickly and many doors to social/recreational opportunities open slowly, if at all.

We hope that this information can provide the information that you want, so that you can help provide us with the support that we need. This Foundation and its wholly-volunteer Board of Trustees exist to educate the public on the spectrum of Autism and to provide educational, social and recreational opportunities to children with Autism. To that end, the Foundation has created a speaker's bureau and self-help group, organized social events and sports teams and physical activities, purchased and donated educational technology, funded field trips, sponsored research, built a self-contained play-ground, and established the Busy Bee Center for Children with Autism, a first of its kind early intervention program for children as young as 18 months old.

Should you have any questions about the Foundation, or what you read in this website, or simply wish to discuss ways in which donors, supporters, sponsors and benefactors can make a difference in the life of a child with Autism, please contact us.
